This is general guidance by genus. Species, hybrids, potting mix and your home conditions may call for different care. Check moisture and actual growth before following a schedule.
Light and position
Bright filtered light, similar to a Cattleya but without strong direct sun.
When and how to water
Barely moist while growing; let the surface dry between waterings. Water at the base — water on the leaf leaves black spots.
Potting mix and container
Medium bark with perlite; takes a little more moisture than a Cattleya.
Feeding during growth
Balanced feed every two weeks while the pseudobulb grows.
When to repot
Every two years, in spring, just as new roots appear.
Dormancy and seasonal changes
A light winter rest: less water, no feed, until the new growth shows.
Flowering and new growth
The spike emerges with the new growth, before the pseudobulb matures. Three to eight fragrant flowers for four to six weeks. A cool winter and enough light while the pseudobulb matures.
What to watch for
If spots appear, review airflow, moisture and how the tissue changes. Appearance alone does not identify the cause; avoid repeatedly wetting leaves in stagnant air.
