This is general guidance by genus. Species, hybrids, potting mix and your home conditions may call for different care. Check moisture and actual growth before following a schedule.

Light and position

Near full sun, with some midday filtering. It tolerates more light than any other orchid here.

When and how to water

With exposed roots, wet them thoroughly, then allow them to drain and dry between waterings. Daily checks may be needed, especially in heat and dry air; inspect the roots before repeating. In a pot, also check the medium. Adjust to the species, humidity and actual drying rather than a fixed seasonal frequency.

Potting mix and container

None, or a few chunks of charcoal and coarse bark in a teak basket.

Feeding during growth

Weekly, very dilute feed with the watering. It eats a lot because it grows a lot.

When to repot

Almost never: it lives in a wooden basket or hangs bare. Change the basket only when it rots.

Dormancy and seasonal changes

No rest, but cut back water and food in winter if temperatures fall below 18 °C.

Flowering and new growth

Can bloom two or three times a year with enough light. Flowers last three to six weeks. Light alone. If it will not bloom, it needs more sun, not more fertiliser.

What to watch for

Exposed roots can dry quickly in warm, dry rooms. Adjust checks to the growing method and airflow rather than assuming one interval suits every plant.
