This is general guidance by genus. Species, hybrids, potting mix and your home conditions may call for different care. Check moisture and actual growth before following a schedule.

Light and position

Bright filtered light. Thin-leaved types take more sun than the broad, soft-leaved ones.

When and how to water

Water thoroughly with good drainage and keep the medium airy and lightly moist during growth. Fine roots tolerate neither prolonged dryness nor a sodden center. Check moisture inside the pot and adjust frequency to the species and actual drying; the surface alone can be misleading.

Potting mix and container

Fine bark with perlite or coconut fibre — holds some moisture without staying soggy.

Feeding during growth

Weak, frequent feeding. It is salt-sensitive — flush the mix once a month.

When to repot

Every 18 months, when the mix compacts. Divide leaving at least three pseudobulbs per piece.

Dormancy and seasonal changes

No marked rest. Just ease off watering when growth stops in winter.

Flowering and new growth

A branched spike with dozens of flowers, usually after the new pseudobulb matures. Lasts three to six weeks. It blooms when the pseudobulb fattens properly: steady water and food during growth is the key, not cold.

What to watch for

Pleating in a new leaf can accompany difficulty receiving water during growth. Check moisture and roots before changing the watering frequency.
