This is general guidance by genus. Species, hybrids, potting mix and your home conditions may call for different care. Check moisture and actual growth before following a schedule.

Light and position

Bright filtered light, with some gentle morning sun.

When and how to water

Regular water while growing, letting the surface dry between waterings.

Potting mix and container

Medium bark with perlite, or mounted if the rhizome climbs a lot.

Feeding during growth

Weak feed every three weeks while growing. It is among the least fussy, but the climbing rhizome leaves new roots in the air: wet that zone properly when feeding or nothing reaches them.

When to repot

Inspect the medium and repot if it breaks down or the plant needs room, preferably as new roots start. Keep the rhizome at the surface rather than burying it; if it climbs, secure it and provide airy medium for the new roots without covering the stem.

Dormancy and seasonal changes

A light winter rest with less water.

Flowering and new growth

Single flowers from the base of the pseudobulb, often many at once, lasting two to three weeks. Strong summer growth and an autumn temperature drop.

What to watch for

If the rhizome grows beyond the pot, check that new roots receive suitable moisture and support. Choose the container or mount for the species and your conditions.
